It is highly fitting that the oldest Episcopal church in Germany should be situated in Germany's oldest city. At the time of the Emperor Constantine, a basilica was constructed from the remains of a Roman residential building between 310 and 320 A.D., and this was then expanded into a larger church structure in the year 329.

Later, in the 4th century, parts of the church were destroyed by the Franconians and further parts by the forays of the Vikings in the Rhineland. Renovation work was carried out on the cathedral from the 11th century and it was constantly being expanded. The last thorough renovation of St. Peter's Cathedral were carried out between 1960 and 1974.

Heilig-Rock-Tage (Holy Robe Days)

Trier Cathedral is not just a meeting place for Christian folk but also a place of pilgrimage. For here, the well-known relic, the “Holy Robe” is preserved in a wooden shrine dating back to 1891, which in turn is underneath a climatised glass shrine. The Holy Robe is only accessible during the Holy Robe Days, which attract pilgrims to the cathedral city each year.
