Towering over 100 metres above the county seat of Cochem, on the peak of a hill visible from afar, is the landmark of this town. Cochem's Reichsburg is the largest complex of the elevated castle type on the Mosel and can confidently be described as the Neuschwanstein of the Mosel. It was built as a fortress in Romanesque style after 1056. After many changes of ownership and ravages the imposing castle was used in the Middle Ages as a toll castle because its choice location gave a wide view over the Mosel valley. In 1689 it fell victim to French troops, was set on fire, mined and blown up.

After having lain as a ruin for a considerable time, the Berlin merchant Louis Ravené commissioned the castle's reconstruction in Neogothic style. It was used as his family’s summer residence until 75 years later when it reverted to the possession of the town of Cochem. Today some of the castle’s rooms can be viewed on guided tours.
