At the behest of the Prussian Rhine Province, a monumental equestrian statue in memory of the German Emperor Wilhelm I, deceased in 1888, was erected at the outermost end of the Deutsche Eck. The young Emperor Wilhelm II selected this location in the year 1891. At this time the area of land was prepared for the monument by filling in the small harbour connected to the mainland by a jetty. Shortly before the end of World War Two in March 1945, the monument was destroyed by the American allied forces.

There were lengthy discussions on whether the monument should be rebuilt. Not until the ownership of the city of Coblenz was transferred to the state of Rheinland-Pfalz was a replica commissioned, to be inaugurated in 1993.
