Festung Ehrenbreitstein (Ehrenbreitstein Fortress)

At around 120 metres above the confluence of Mosel and Rhine and set upon three prominent mountain slopes, towers the bastion of Ehrenbreitstein. The gigantic fortress was built by the Prussians between 1817 and 1828, although Ehrenbreitstein has been proven to be settled as early as 4,000 BC.

As early as the year 1000 AD, and on this very spot, there stood Fort Ehrenbreitstein which was the figurehead for the Estate of the Electorate of Trier east of the Rhine and was regarded as the most secure castle. In the 16th century the Baroque castle was expanded into a Prussian fortification which in the year 1801 was razed to the ground by the French.

Today, the fortress is the property of the state of Rheinland-Pfalz and houses the Coblenz Provincial Museum, the Coblenz youth hostel, the Army Memorial and various administrative bodies. Ehrenbreitstein Fortress is a protected cultural monument and has, since 2002, belonged to the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley.
