Deutscher Kaiser (‘‘German Emperor‘‘)

The Deutscher Kaiser is a five-storey residential and commercial building built by the city walls in the year 1490. The architect has left his mark for posterity with his coat of arms in several places: on a keystone in a vault in the southernmost part of the ground floor and also in the arched frieze of the north façade.

In the 19th century, the red tower, which had withstood the War of Succession and the air raids of World War Two, was converted into a guest house and given the name “Deutscher Kaiser”. The residential tower built of slate and tufa stone is a listed cultural monument and has since 2002 belonged to the UNESCO World Heritagee Upper Middle Rhine Valley.
