Over 40 Carnival societies are affiliated to the umbrella organization Koblenz Carnival Association. The Carnival Museum came into being in the wake of an exhibition on the Ehrenbreitstein fortifications in which clownish exhibits were shown for the first time. The societies were approached and a collection of exhibits was put together, not just from Koblenz but also from Basel to Cologne. Among these, all manner of costumes and medals from carnevalists. The largest donated collection came from former Chancellor Dr. Helmut Kohl, which, because of its size can only ever be exhibited in part.
