A chapel was first documented in the year 1652 at the time of Karl Casper von der Leyen, electoral prince of Trier. But by the 19th century it was in such a dilapidated state that a new chapel was erected in its place. Its reconstruction was funded solely by donations from the population of Cochem, and was finished in 1850.

If you walk up the steep rocky slope between Cochem and Sehl you will be rewarded with the magnificent view over the Mosel valley and Cochem’s Imperial Palace. To the left and right of the crucified Christ there stand two Anthony crosses, these latter without effigies. From these the name “of the Three Crosses” was taken.
