The Art Nouveau Mecca on the Mosel

Traben-Trarbach is a twin town on the Mosel and is situated at the head of a narrow Mosel bend and on the opposite bank on the bend at the foot of the hill Mont Royal Mosel. There is hardly any fair-sized town on the Mosel without a castle, and here, the ruin of Grevenburg Castle towers over the district of Trarbach rewarding the visitor with magnificent views.

If one had to describe the Mosel town in one sentence, it would be something like this: wine, art nouveau and healing water - because those are the three gifts that the Mosel town offers. From a depth of over 400 metres of shale bubbles the 32°C warm spring water, which is said to have a healing effect. Thus Traben-Trarbach with its district of Bad Wildstein is a nationally recognized health resort. Today you can find the healing waters in the only thermal bath in the Mosel valley.

Once the city Traben-Trarbach was the second largest wine trading center in Europe after Bordeaux. The reason for this exceptional position was the great demand for Riesling wines and exports especially to the UK and overseas. This attracted the establishment of more than 100 wine companies and made Traben-Trarbach into a very prosperous city. In accordance, the areas of below-ground Traben-Trarbach are extensive, having been expanded into a mystical network of vaults over 100 metres long and in parts two storeys high. Today this underworld is ideal for diverse experiences. A special highlight is certainly the annual Mosel wine-night-market, which takes place in the vaulted cellars and is an unforgettable, atmospheric experience.

Traces of the "Belle Epoque", as the great times of profitable wine trade is known, brought a lot of buildings in Art Nouveau style which are in evidence to admire to this day. Of particular interest are the Brückentor (Bridge Gate) the Villa Huesgen, the Breucker Villa and today's Hotel Bellevue.

Since Traben-Trarbach - with districts Bad Wildstein, Wolf and Kautenbach - in terms of area is the largest town on the Mosel, it is not surprising that its delightful 5 km long river promenades invite you to stroll and enjoy. History and culture of the Mosel village can be experienced during a visit to the Middle Mosel Museum, the House of the Icons, the Bicycle Museum or the city tower with its chimes.
