Set in the historical city centre, Trier's main market square, the Hauptmarkt is thought by many to be one of the city's finest locations. In the centre of the large square, set upon a plinth, stands the five-metre-high market cross consisting of an antique granite pillar which is regarded a sovereign symbol. It is, however, only a replica – the original can be found in the Museum im Simeonstift. Situated opposite the market cross is the Petrusbrunnen (Fountain of St. Peter) dating back to the year 1595, atop of which stands the city's patron saint Peter.

The best way to enjoy the market square with its hustle and bustle is on the terrace of one of the many street cafés or restaurants, or enjoying a leisurely stroll through the city centre with its numerous shopping attractions.
