Mariensäule (Mary's Pillar)

On the left side of the Mosel – on the Markusberg (St. Mark's Mount), Mary's Pillar stands at a height of 300 metres. As in many places, The Mariensäule was built high above the city of Trier in 1859 as a result of the Catholic community's protest against Prussian Protestant dominance.

The Mary Statue, constructed of sandstone blocks, is 40 metres high and the plinth was designed in Neogothic style. With the choice of building materials of which some came from the Roman city walls, the ancient tradition of the Catholic church in Trier was symbolized. After a construction period of 7 years, the Mariensäule, situated directly opposite the Basilica, was consecrated by Bishop Leopold Pellgram in the year 1866. The funds for the construction of the memorial were provided by the citizens of Trier themselves.

To this day, nightly illumination is financed by donations. The Mariensäule has become a popular observation point because the view over the city of Trier and the surrounding Mosel valley is fantastic.
