Today's Palace Gardens had a long history before they became what they are today. At the time of the Electoral Princes there was a park south of the Electoral Palace but after the occupation by the French it was made into a public place. At the time the Palace was being used as a barracks the area was used as an exercise yard. At the beginning of the 20th century, the City of Trier wanted to create a park but plans for this fell through due to lack of financing.

Due only to the mischievous legacy of one Franz Weissebach was the former exercise yard able to be made into a park. Today the Palace Gardens with their remarkable lawns and artistic sculptures are a popular meeting place for the people of the city and of course its guests.
