Kaiserthermen (Imperial Thermal Baths)

When the plans were laid for the construction of the Imperial Baths, which contributed to the appointment of the City of Trier as a Capital, it was intended to be one of the greatest bathing establishments in the Roman Empire. However, the Roman baths, which were to have been opened to the public, were never finished. The building shell remained unused and over the years began to crumble. Not until the Emperor Gratian (375-383) were the Thermal Baths converted to a garrison for the imperial bodyguards.

Today the walls of up to 19 metres' height are the monumental remains of what was once the newest and largest Roman thermal baths and cavalry barracks in Trier. The former warm bathing hall is most suitable for theatre performances, offering seating for up to 650 spectators. Since 1986, the Imperial Baths have been part of the UNESCO World Heritage and Cultural Property in accordance with the heritage preservation law of the state of Rhineland-Pfalz.
