For those wishing to know what has been going on historically for the past 200,000 years, the Rhineland Museum, dating back to 1877, is the right place to be. The permanent exhibition, occupying a vast 4,000 square metres, gives comprehensive information from the Roman era and the Middle Ages right up to modern times.

The tour of Trier's history is especially popular. A large section of the exhibition is dedicated to the Roman era, but impressive exhibits from the post-Roman era also tell some impressive stories. In addition to the permanent exhibition there is always a special exhibition plus a medial space theatre “In the Realm of Shadows”.
