The Baroque birthplace of the German economist, philosopher, author and revolutionary is the only museum today dedicated to the life and work of Karl Marx. The controversial social critic was born in what is today Brückenstrasse (Bridge Street) in the year 1818. The family moved to a smaller house in Simeon Street in 1819 and the original birthplace was forgotten until it was purchased by the political party SPD in 1928 and from 1930 extensively renovated.

Not until 1947 was the Karl Marx House opened to the public with its several exhibition rooms. It has been repeatedly renovated, extended and redesigned – the last time in 2005. The permanent exhibition is dedicated to the life of the man who was Karl Marx (1818 - 1883). In addition there is an exhibition on the history of communism in the Soviet Union, the rest of Eastern Europe and China.
