This museum is situated immediately next to the Porta Nigra and exhibits art and cultural treasures from the Middle Ages up to the 21st Century. The basis of the museum consists of donations from prominent citizens and, as a result, the exhibition has a great diversity of themes and styles. Over 900 different items are displayed in the space of 1000 square metres, including sculptures and East Asian statuettes, paintings, handicrafts and furniture. Beside the many exhibits there are also over 40 multimedia presentations in the form of films, image sequences and listening stations. The history of the museum dates back to the 19th Century and has ever since been able to draw on its treasures.
